In 1935 you had lost your job at the Ford Automobile plant in Detroit because no one could afford to buy cars. After a few years traveling around looking for work as a "hobo" you returned to Detroit. In 1942 you got your job back because the Army commissioned Ford to build jeeps for the war in Detroit. You were too old to fight in the war but you felt you were doing your part building jeeps. It also helped you and your family get back on your feet after the depression ended.
